UAE company setup from United States
US founders often look at a UAE company for a Gulf operating base and a UAE residence pathway, knowing that US tax obligations follow citizenship rather than where the company sits.
Setup planning
- A UAE operating entity for clients and contracts across the Gulf, Middle East and South Asia
- A UAE residence visa through company ownership for founders relocating to the region
- Free-zone licences that can be prepared largely before travel
- A time zone that overlaps working hours in both Europe and Asia
Documents to prepare
Confirm the checklist for your authority, legal form and document origin. These preparation notes are not a universal filing checklist.
- US passport valid for at least six months beyond the planned arrival date
- Proof of residential address and a CV or professional profile for activity selection
- US personal documents (birth or marriage certificates, powers of attorney): the UAE Embassy in Washington requires authentication by the US Department of State Authentication Office before embassy attestation, now handled through VFS Global. The UAE is not listed as a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, and the embassy does not describe a state apostille as sufficient.
- Corporate documents for a US company shareholder (formation documents, good standing, board resolutions): the embassy requires attestation by the issuing state's Secretary of State before submission. UAE MOFA attestation inside the UAE is a further step; confirm with your licensing authority whether it applies to your documents.
Travel and sequencing
US citizens on a regular passport do not need to apply for a visa in advance: a visa is issued on entry, allowing a maximum stay of 90 days, non-renewable, within 180 days of first entry. The UAE Embassy in Washington also asks for a passport valid at least six months beyond arrival and a return or onward ticket. Residence visa medical and biometrics need presence in the UAE.
Check the required appointments and entry or status-change route before booking travel.

What this page does not cover
- Whether you stop being tax resident in United States. That depends on your own circumstances and the rules there, and it needs an adviser in that country, not a UAE directory.
- How a UAE company is treated by your home tax authority, including reporting obligations that may continue after you move.
- Immigration eligibility. We describe the residency steps that follow a licence, not who qualifies for one.
Country-specific checks
US citizens and US resident aliens abroad generally remain subject to US tax rules on worldwide income. Whether a return is required depends on the applicable filing rules; foreign-earned-income exclusions or tax credits require the relevant eligibility and filings. UAE residence alone does not settle US tax obligations.

FAQ
Does a UAE company or residence end my US tax obligations?
No. US citizens and resident aliens abroad generally remain subject to US tax rules on worldwide income, and a UAE company or UAE residence does not settle them. This page is a company-setup orientation, not tax advice; get a qualified US cross-border tax adviser before you set up.
Can I use a state apostille for UAE filings?
The UAE Embassy in Washington describes a different route: personal documents are authenticated by the US Department of State Authentication Office, and corporate documents by the issuing state's Secretary of State, before embassy attestation. Confirm the route for each document with the embassy or VFS Global before sending originals.
